Jessica Lastre's Initial Composition

This is my final object/initial composition.  For my object, I used a baby bottle.  In a sense, it signifies the pain from growing into the adult world, leaving your childhood behind.  To the right of my object, my initials float above the flattened pool of red that is also copied and flipped below it. My initials are a play on negative space, contrasting the dark background. I feel that both these compositions are strong enough to be presented on their own. I also feel that they can be represented together as a unifying piece.

I paid close attention to layers while building this composition from a combination of scanned sketches, pen-tool work, shape manipulation and multiplication and layered gradients. I was aiming for a stylized rendition in photorealistic honey color . . . again took Mr. Mascari's advice to dim the background pattern to allow provide the object with greater definition.

In executing this project I utilized typography techniques, the pathfinder and pen tools, worked with a gradient within a greyscale color palate. I took Dan's advice to increase the transparency of the background to allow for the monogram to stand out on its own - looks much better!

I decided to arrange my initials so that the letters are insinuated. I had a more complex version of the letter 's,' but decided to keep it simple with three shapes. The letter T is an enlarged font that I divided. Had I spent more time, I would have added more detail to the padlock. I didn't want the letters to look flat on the padlock, so I gave them an engraved effect.

Initials compositions project 2

I really liked this project the best. I wanted to do something with a car or tiger. I was going through  some ideas with the initial being in the strips of the tiger. But I am glade that I went with the tag of the collar. First having the tiger wearing t and haveing a simple look on his face then haveing a more agressive look with the collar in his mouth. Over all I think this project went really well and I put a lot of time in this one more than the Dick Tracy one. I really had fun with this project and was able to do more with it.

TILLMAN_DICK TRACY

The inspiration for my illustration was the Morton Umbrella Girl. I like the complementary yellow and purple colors and decided to implement them into my piece. I started by drawing my stylized image and then scanning it into Illustrator. I tried another text, but I liked this one better.

this was the frist project we did and i was not really clear on the instructions. After seeing everybody elses in class i see how much further I could have gone with it. My whole idea was to use Hockney as my inspiration and to piece it together to make one big picture.

Interlocking Rings Illustrator Tutorial

Watching the Olympics recently reminded me of an Adobe Illustrator tutorial that covered creating interlocking rings. This tutorial covers use of the pathfinder tools and although it is an older version of Illustrator all of the concepts are still relevant.

This 1970's psychedelic stylized version of the yellow-hatted detective was executed in Illustrator using a combination of simple techiques that included tracing with the pen tool, creating patterns of simple shapes, opacity manipulation and masking, with special attention given to layer/shape organization. The image is intended to evoke rotation and movement between the two poses. . .

" The New Dick Tracy "

Project one Dick Tracy

I used a similar style as the artist Mucha. I used the geometric shapes and braking up the back ground like he used in many of his drawing. Then pushing the text back behind Dick Tracy; however, I didn't like how the Dick part came out it gets a bit lost with the gun smoke. Over all I like how the drawing came out and how it all flows together.

Jessie Lastre's "Frida Tracy"

For this project, I was inspired by my favorite artist Frida Kahlo. Frida typically portrayed herself as "manly" which is why I thought she would be perfect for this part. I took most of my inspiration from one of her more feminine self portraits. Aside from that, I wanted to keep the original look of Dick Tracy and kept the color scheme used on the Warren Beatty film posters. I primarily used the pen tool to help keep with the comic book look and feel. I believe I was successful in my attempts.
