In the initials composition the choice of simplicity and a classic look was the approach.  The classic shades of color were used in creating a shine and symbolism of a locket for a necklace.  The use of the typestyle Monotype Corsiva gives the letters a classic feel. Using a blend of the "J" and the "G" with a gradient and manipulating the letters some gave the initials a variation. The "J" sets in the foreground and the "G" is inset just a touch. achieving my goal with the initials gave it a simplistic classy feel.

The initials sketches lead me to the design of the stem and leaf area. The "J" and "G" can be seen in the stem and leaf areas. Because the initials brought me to the object of a flower I chose a flower that was appropriate for a classic simplistic comfort. The Lilly is one of my favorite flowers as is the purple shades of color. Using the pen tool, different gradients, the live paint tool and multiple layers I created the shading in the flower. I copied the smaller flower and changed it to reflect the lighting and the flower has some changes in it as well. I also decided to use the flower as a watermark in the background and implemented just the initials within the watermark. This was all created using Illustrator.

I created the PBR can in Illustrator mainly using the pencil and pen tools. The puddle of beer was initially created in Photoshop and was the hardest part of the project. The puddle was my first attempt at drawing liquid (on paper or digital) and it was very difficult. I also incorporated my initials into the right-center of the puddle (NL). Overall I think the can looks very realistic and the puddle looks more like a painting, so the two images tend to clash.

-If you can't see, this is a tree mixed with a ballerina figure. I love nature, especially tree's, and danced my entire life. So, i created two in one. I chose the colors b/c i enjoy the rasta colors and feel as though they go well together. I didn't want to do just typical cliche green leaves. I think the swirls in the background give it that last final touch.

-As for this one, i wanted to do something with music, but wanted to do something different. So i chose to do DJ headphones. I made a vector of the headphones, leaving out some detail for the eye to fill in. The background i created with different brushes while distorting them one by one and layering. I also played with the Layering Modes such as color burn and screen, leaving the colors to show through in different shades. It was a struggle for me to decide if the background was too much, taking away from the headphones. I lowered the opacity a lot, but not too much to loose the color and effect.

Project3

This project turned out much better than the last one.  I was able to get a tutor to help me learn how to use the pen tool.  Even though they are very simple illustrations, I am proud of them because it's the first successful thing I've done in Illustrator.  My inspiration came from a different project exploring hand-rendered type.  In that project we looked at some type done with toothpaste and I decided to stick with that.

Project 3 - Initials Composition

So here is my initials and my object. I chose to put penguins in my initials because most of my favorite designs are very very form, sleek, and black & white... and what is more formal, sleek and black & white than an animal that wears a tuxedo daily? I also chose to do a flashlight because I haven't ever done one before.

Jonathan Otte: Initials/Object

Here are my two images from project three. Both are done fully in illustrator. The color pallet that I use was because I have always liked the combination of red and black. The initials are a good representation of me because I have always been a corner person. I have always been one to look for the corner seat in a room which brought on the image of the chair.

Gooolfer man

My main object was originally a single golf ball, but i wanted to give the piece a better composition so I decided to incorporate a golfer in the background. I think it gives the piece atmosphere and a level of drama that gives a sense of movement. i believe that adding a blurred flight path for the ball also helps with this. For the initials, I started out just by sketching different orientations for my initials until i came upon a configuration and basic frame in which to expound upon. Once I had this i wanted to give the initials design some volume and higher level of detail and complexity so that viewers would find the composition more interesting. I messed around with transparency and different opacity levels so that some parts of the initials were almost translucent in appearance.

Object & Initials Project

For this project I chose to do a nautical theme with both my initials and my object.  First, I decided on a great white shark as my object and from that point made decisions on how I would lay out the rest.  I used illustrator to recreate the shark using the pen and pencil tools.  I then took that into photoshop where I manipulated a photo of a nautical map.  I applied gradients and color correction to the map and went back to Illustrator for my initials.  I wanted my initials to coincide with the rest of the project so I started with Adobe Garamond Pro typeface and gave it a grid look while playing with symmetry and negative space.  My thumbnails helped me nail one idea down and stick with it.

Initials Project

This is the object I chose.  I incorporated my initials in the bottom of the shoe, creating a effect where it was part of the shoe.  I used the pen tool to create the shoe itself and the logos.  I used a drop shadow for the initials and the logo to make them pop out and stand out more.  The original color of the shoe was gray. white and red, and i wanted to drop colors in the shoe that made the shoe stand out more.

Initials Project :)

This was my initials composition - a yo yo including my initials JY. The yo yo symbolizes my life - a constant up and down and twist and turn; the initials are simple to represent me - simple and organized, a nice little contrast to the twists and turns of the yo yo. The only thing I would like to take further is the string - I'd like to be able to add more detail and make it look realistic, as well as maybe taking my initials another step further - especially by removing the line seperating the letters themselves.

All in all, it was a fun project :)

This is the remix album for Velvet Revolvers Contraband CD.
The original cover is all black with a silhouette of a girl in the center. In my version I incorporated the silhouette, only bigger and of to the side. Inside the body I filled it with the words Velvet Revolver and Contraband, making Contraband more noticeable since it is the name of the CD. I put all of the band members faces because they do not have a CD with them on the cover and I made it black and red because that seems to be the colors they have favored. Then I cave the front and back covers a grunge look for more of "rock" look.

Project 2 - Album Remix

I decided to go with Santogold's CD because her style is very fun and festive! I chose to go with m bright colors because most of her album covers are more natural tones.

Project2

I will reiterate that I do not know much about Illustrator so this project was more difficult for me because I actually tried to do more work in the actual program.  I made the image in the middle by hand with indian ink and altered it in Illustrator.  The rest of the album I did in Illustrator, however, I wasn't able to accomplish a lot of what I wanted to do simply because I did not know how to do it.  I wanted to make the middle image a circle and also incorporate Gwen Stefani into the composition by cutting her out of the original album and pasting her in, but it just wasn't working out the way I wanted it to.

Project 2, album cover

I decided to do the Blue oyster cult, Tyranny and Mutation album. In the original, the circles  are  black and white so I added  more  circles and color. Then I duplicated the floor, using the pen tool and the line segment tool. Then added the building and the blue oyster cult logo from the original album. I put the title of the album in the new circles.

Album Cover Remix

I chose to recreate the Master P CD "Good Side, Bad Side." I also added my face instead of his onto the cover. I did absolutely all of the work in Illustrator using both the pen and pencil tool set to auto fill. Before I started working digitally I spent time on a few thumbnails, playing around with locations of the main content on the cover. After testing a few ideas, I decided to keep the original layout and color scheme. The end.
I used the pencil and pen tools to create most of the album cover and other artwork for this project. I was a little disappointed in the printed images but overall I thought the project went ok. RIP Robert Goulet.

With the album re-design project I chose to pursue a totally original concept and not work with any pre-existing album artwork. I decided early on that I was going to work with something that was related to the Grateful Dead, simply because I believe that their style of music goes along pretty well with my style of illustration. I wanted to take the basic concept of their main logo (the dead head) but go about the illustration of it in a unique way. I started with a conceptualization of the logo by basically turning the "dead head" into a different but easily recognizable form, that being a tree. I wanted to retain the main focal points of the logo, being the stylization of a skull and the infamous lightning bolt in the middle of the top of the skull by creating a basic outline representation of the bolt with the edge of the foliage on the tree and indentations and bends in the form of the trunk that hint at the definition of a skull. I think the concept was relatively successful.

Paint brush, project 1 valorie Myer

I decided to illustrate a paint brush. I looked at my old paint brushes and pictures of paint brushes and created one of my own similar to what I saw. I basically used the pen tool for the base of the brush and used the paint brush tool  for the bristles.

Album Remix -Project 2

Objective: To select an album cover and update it or modify it using your own illustration style learned in class.

Problem:
· The logo needs some minor modifications.
· The background image on the cover does not depict “enjoy the ride” theme of the CD.
· The color scheme does not match the actual CD label inside the case.
Solution:
· Clean up the logo using similar type style.
· Add a new color scheme and manipulate the text for readability and boldness.
· The background image needs to emulate the interior CD label. I have chosen this image to
blend with that of the CD label.
· Manipulated the image in Photoshop to create the desired design effect.
· Create a layout that is effective and fits the theme of the album.

Final Layout

Jonathan Otte's Como Canon.

Here is my recreation of a Spanish CD over called 'Como Canon'. I was able to use the building in the background and make it the negative space to form the shape of the girl standing on the cannon and also frame the left side of the image to let the title pop out more.

Album Cover Remix

This is my album cover remix. I picked an album from 1979 by Joe Jackson.. his original album artwork is featured on top. I wanted to take the idea of that cover and modernize it, so I decided to use a pair of Converse shoes as my focus.. after illustrating that and adding the text elements, I took the project a bit further and created a inside to the cover as well as a back cover/traycard. Adding the elements that a CD jacket consists of, like record label logos and barcodes helped turn this remix into a realistic-looking CD cover. :)
This is my New and improved album cover of Ray Charles.  I had fun working on this project.  I pretty much just used the pen tool to outline the figure of Ray Charles, showing all the shadows and highlights on his face.  I also used the pen tool to create the piano in the background.  I used the pathfinder tool to overlap things throughout the album cover.  I wanted the album cover to be black and white because it makes it look more original.  i wanted the main aspect of the album cover, which is Ray charles, to stand out more than anything else in the cover.

CD Remix :-)

The assignment was pretty open as far as creativity. You could choose any album, of any band, or single artist. And recreate or completely create a new album cover for the band or artist you chose. While choosing a band, I kept in mind choosing one that I obviously liked. In doing so, it would inspire me more to create something special to me. I ended up choosing "The Spill Canvas." I truly enjoy listening to this band, as well as the lyrics. I can relate very much to the lyrics, which makes everything better obviously :-) I used the pen tool to create the Hummingbird Vectors as well as the heart. I decided to only make the heart green b/c i feel as though it stands out just enough with the single pop of color with the black and white.
